Adrian Clark-
WAAAH! IT’S THE SCHIZO SISTERS!

4:16

This funny little ditty uses a Zappa-influenced musical approach which I really like - namely, that a one-off improvisation can become part (or all of) a written composition. Using some lo-fi drum loops as a backing, I improvised three guitar solos and used them as the verses and middle section of the piece. Being modestly impressed by the middle one, and finding myself singing it aloud, I learned it and doubled it on acoustic guitar to make it stick out a bit more. For the choruses and ending, I sampled some little acoustic guitar fragments and layered them in various ways.
For the techies...
a Roland VS-880 digital recorder, Akai S2000 sampler and a Yamaha QY700 sequencer were the main tools, along with an Ibanez RG guitar, a Roland GP-100 and a Joe Meek compressor/preamp. I wish I’d had my RNC compressor when I recorded this, rather than just the VS880’s compressor.
Oh, and the title... the Schizo Sisters is the name I gave to the two women who lived in the flat downstairs. They weren’t problem neighbours or anything, but the only really loud noise we ever heard from them was either SCREAMING ARGUMENTS or SCREAMING SEX. One of them has moved out now, so I guess the relationship is over. Poor Schizos; true love is so hard to find.

I play guitar, a bit of bass, even less keyboards, and sometimes I sing (please, remain calm, I’m not singing on this cd). This track is a song I recorded with my former band Spine. These days I play in a band called In ‘t Wild, doing lots of gigs in the Netherlands. Also, we have just finished recording our new cd, which we hope to release in the spring of 2000.

Michael P. Dawson- Crepuscule with Biffy

1:52

Michael P. Dawson

Crepuscule with Biffy is a study in harmonizing a melodic line set entirely in a whole-tone scale with an accompaniment that moves in chromatic steps, thus falling outside the scale of the melody exactly 50% of the time. It was composed especially for this collection.

Charles Ulrich (The Pygmies)-
The Pygmy Song

3:25

Charles Ulrich - lead and backing vocals, anglo concertina
Mike Swick-electric bass guitar, hand claps, engineering
     David Harper- mandolin.

The Pygmies (fl. 1984-1989, Albuquerque, New Mexico) were usually a duo of Charles Ulrich (squeezeboxes, key boards, vocals) and Mike Swick (bass, guitars). Their fifteen minutes of fame was opening for Timbuk 3 at Bow Wow Records, but their main haunt was the late, lamented Sheepherder’s Cafe. The Pygmy Song- one of their four theme songs-was digitally recorded at the University of New Mexico, circa 1987, for their unreleased album, which also featured David Harper (Celtic harp, banjos, fiddle, mandolin, saxes, recorders, slide guitar, charango, bassoon). An earlier version of the song, recorded in Santa Monica, California, circa 1981, by the Largely Responsible Pygmy Ensemble, was played on Dr. Demento’s radio show at least once.

Ars longa; pygmaeus brevis.
